Cycling in Autumn and Winter

Cycling in Autumn and Winter

Posted by Rafe Baker on

Join us in this week’s blog as we identify essential cycling gear for Autumn and Winter.

Autumn and Winter can be unforgiving without the right kit. Fortunately, numb hands and feet are avoidable.

At Sealskinz, we’re a team of cyclists who understand the demands of the sport. Many of us commute by bike, and a few of the team hit trails at the weekend. Our own experience fuels our product, creating authentic, performance-driven cycling apparel.

What makes a good cycling sock?

There are few things worse than wet feet while cycling. Rainwater and mud splashing up from the road and into your socks can be prevented with the right gear. Waterproof socks are a great option.

Sealskinz waterproof socks utilise our own patented Aquasealz™ membrane, combining 100% waterproofness with excellent breathability. Your feet will remain well ventilated and dry during intense cycle rides, with Aquasealz™ technology handling sudden increases in perspiration. Internal moisture and heat escapes from inside the sock, optimising comfort.

Briston

The Briston is a great all weather waterproof cycling sock, ideal for Autumn. Made with Hydrostop™, ensuring water cannot trickle down the leg into cuff of sock. A premium merino wool and acrylic lining offers the optimal blend of insulation and breathability.

Stanfield

The Stanfield is a mid-length, waterproof cycling sock built for extreme cold and wet conditions. A seamless construction stops blisters forming. The Worstead is a knee length alternative.

Should you wear cycling overshoes?

Cycling overshoes offer further protection against the spray of water and mud. A mainstay in road cycling, shoe covers are either closed sole or open sole. Sealskinz overshoes are enforced with a Kevlar® heel and toe, managing the wear and tear of clipping into heels and repeated contact with crank arms.

What is the best cycling headgear?

A lightweight, windproof skull cap is essential for cycling in colder conditions. The Wacton is highly effective in transferring moisture away from the skin, maximising breathability.

The Beetley is a great option for extreme cold weather, with full face and neck coverage minimising exposure to the elements.

What are the differences between an Autumn and Winter cycling glove?

Varying climates require different gloves. An Autumn glove tends to be lighter than its winter counterpart.

Harling

Harling

A premium cycling glove for milder weather. Extra-durable and fully waterproof. Pre-curved fingers enhance flexibility, while a PU suede palm increases grip.

Barwick

Barwick

A waterproof, split finger glove for harsh cold climates. Climashield® is highly insulative, replicating the feel of down without the bulk. A split finger design helps transfer heat between fingers, helping retain warmth.

Upwell

Upwell

A heated, waterproof cycling glove for the extreme cold. An integrated heating element has a rechargeable battery, providing lasting warmth in freezing conditions. A favourite here at Sealskinz.

What makes a good mountain biking glove?

A good mountain biking glove balances durability and dexterity, assisting movement while handling the wear and tear of trail routes. The Sutton is our vision of a MTB glove – fully wateerproof and breathable, the Sutton can overcome the toughest of trails.
